TROY and Jay Baumgardner at NRG Studios

TROY band at NRG Studios in Hollywood, CA interviewed by Ernie BallKyle Girth of TROY band looking at Hollywood sign during visit to NRG studios to record with Jay Baumgardner.

Jay and Ernie Ball greeted us with open arms!

The Pilgrimage….

…It seemed like forever counting the days before our trip started, but as soon as we got to the West coast time took on a whole different meaning. From the moment we stepped of the plane in Cali, we knew we were beholding a special moment for us in life as musicians. We had finally made the pilgrimage to the Mecca of Rock.

Thankfully we got picked up by a few of our fellow friends and Native Cali rockers Keoni and Micheal of Elements of Kadence & Kyle Ragsdale who was Erik’s previous band mate. These are some of the hardest working guys we know and they all held Springfield as their stomping ground in the past. These cats helped take good care of us & after the obligatory dash to in-and-out burger at 1 in the morning, we were off through the Hollywood hills to find our Airbnb guest house and home for the next couple of weeks (while listening to Bob Segar’s Hollywood Hills mind you).

Studio A

Studio A

Down to business…

…The first day at NRG studios was a sunny Monday morning and we had the pleasure to meet our comrades that we had been chatting with since the announcement of winning Ernie Ball & Uproars Battle of the Bands. Ernie Ball was there and blessed our arrival with brand new custom made guitars and tons of swag and gear. It was great to meet them and see the large arm of the music industry that was pulling strings for TROY behind the curtains. NRG Studios was an absolute spectacle as well. We got the deluxe grand tour from Jay Baumgardner and his staff. The place had a vibe and feel unlike any other music complex or studio I had ever been inside. With gold records and eastern culture décor, the place felt like a mix of Indiana Jones and Abbey Road.

We tracked in studio A the whole session, and it was great to feel the acoustics and reverberation of one of the best live rooms in the world. The drums sounded like a war zone, huge and thunderous with every crash and kick. We used a 59’ Ludwig kit that had huge toms and a 24” kick. In fact, we hardly used anything made after 1975 the entire time in the studio. We had our own “Back to the Future” approach by trying to make a more edgy, aggressively modern and rockin sound with the real deal vintage instruments and boutique artifacts that NRG had within their arsenal. You can see in some of the pictures below just a few of the goodies Jay & NRG put before us:

The real duder…

…Jay was so receptive and a real duder to be around. He made us feel at home in the lounge and in the studio during our stay. Later on the first night, he chatted with us while we ate dinner and eventually we got out into the live room and started going through song Ideas.

We were really impressed by his willingness to listen and by the feedback that he continuously gave us. He attended each song as a performance and you could tell when he was vibing something or when he wasn’t. After the first night we were really close to narrowing down our songs. And by the end of the second day, after much rehearsal and preparation, we got into tracking some drums.

Sonic Haven…

…Many people don’t realize that NRG is a glorified Sonic Haven in the rock world because of their live rooms and ability to capture drums! We were really looking forward to this process because some of the biggest sounding kits in the world were tracked in the very room we were breathing in. We shared the breaths of Giants, and so did the drums 🙂

Erik's Drum Set-Up at NRG Studios with TROY

Erik’s Set-Up at NRG

Throughout the process we did enough guitars and bass to kill a mid-sized pack of wolves, and it all seemed sonically blistering enough to call TROY – We think you all are going to love these songs. Kyle crushed out his parts on a ‘76 Les Paul Gold top with the hottest pickups I have heard since that terrible MTV Playa show. Kane threw down on a Peavey P bass that was literally angry the whole time we were there. Every note sounded like a pissed off robotic Barry White synthesizer.

The 60’ Gibson J45 was a treat for me to play after having played on a 64’ Gibson J45 religiously that was inherited to me from my Grandmother. The neck played fantastic and it really had a nice, woody sound to it that translated well on one of the new hits, Wicked World.

My favorite guitar I got to touch or use in the studio was definitely their ‘86 Gibson Black Beauty Les Paul Custom. This guitar was butter. So stinkin’ smooth it felt like it was coated in black silk. But what was most special of all, were the hits this guitar had under it’s belt. Linkin Park, 3 days grace, Papa Roach, and Alien Ant Farm all used this guitar on some HUGE tracks. In fact, I had the same set up as Papa Roach’s Infest with the Black Beauty and a Marshall Jcm800. It was a thing of beauty and an honor to play on.

The trip to Cali to record was mostly a hypnotic blur for us. The guys and I spent over 14 days in the studio. Some days were longer than others but we had one thing on our minds and that was to write songs that we could feel satisfied with bringing home to our fans and to enjoy the beautiful sight that is NRG Recording Studios. We did get some relax time in though…

Beach Shot

…We hit Venice beach and Santa Monica Blvd a couple afternoons and caught some waves. I threw our beloved GoPro out into the ocean with the dolphins and will probably never hear the end of it from the guys but we sure did have a good time. Exploring the Sunset strip was surreal and we threw down some massive pizza & Calamari at the Rainbow on a wild search for Lemmy of Motorhead.

All in all…

…California was a learning experience for us. We came home with some valuable connections and friendships made. We heard some powerful feedback and gained bookuu advice from legends in the industry. It was an experience that we wouldn’t want to trade in for anything. Hopefully we left a good impression on the West coast, one we can come back to shortly.

The Recording Experience with Jay at NRG studios went well for us. But you know what the best part about this whole experience is??…It isn’t over yet… 🙂

In a few short weeks I have the pleasure of going back out to NRG in California to finish some vocals and tie up a few loose ends before preparing to get the songs in YOUR hands!!

As a Final Note and To Our Fans…

…Not a day goes by where I don’t thank all of you in my heart for voting and helping to make this possible as well as supporting us on the amazing journey that your love has provided. Keep helping to push us further, and keep being the best fans in the world!!

~Cord

TROY & Shaman’s Harvest Sold Out show at the Outland Ballroom: A Win for Missouri Rock n’ Roll

TROY & Shamans Harvest Sold Out show at Outland Ballroom on September 4, 2015.

TROY opened the night with a bang for Missouri brothers, Shaman’s Harvest

TROY has been working hard this summer preparing for their trip to L.A. to record as well as playing regional shows and hosting their Evolution Showcase series. A sold out show in their hometown with Shaman’s Harvest made for yet another great way to celebrate all that The Reality Of Yourself has been through this year as well as the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

TROY had anticipated sharing the stage with Shaman’s Harvest again ever since they last jammed together in August at a gig in Rolla, MO. Although it wasn’t planned, it turned out to be a two band bill for the night which actually helped to make the evening special. TROY was able to play a little bit more material for their fans and the crowd was able to experience two hard-hitting and up and coming mid-western rock n’ rollers in a more unique setting.TROY and Shamans Harvest Sell Out Outland Ballroom September 4, 2015 hosted by Springfield's rock station Q1021

Shaman’s Harvest originated out of Missouri as well, specifically Jeff City, and has been around for over 15 years. Shaman’s Harvest is commonly recognized by their single “Dragonfly” which reached #16 on Billboard’s Active Rock charts in 2009. They have come back with a punch touring the U.S. over the last year on their latest album “Smokin’ Hearts & Broken Guns”. These guys spent the larger part of the 2015 summer touring with Black Stone Cherry and playing many rock n’ roll festivals. There is no doubt that they are working their way towards something great.

The Reality Of Yourself owes Q102, Shaman’s Harvest, and the Outland Ballroom a big thanks for letting us play this show. Thank you to everyone who came out to and helped to make it a sell out show, & thank you for your continued support and love. Rock on and we’ll see you October 2nd!

Ernie Ball Announces TROY winner of the Uproar National Battle of the Bands

TROY Live at Rockstar Uproar Festival 2014

Ernie Ball Announces TROY winner of the Uproar National Battle of the Bands.

The fans and the judges have spoken alike and TROY has been picked the winner of the Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour Battle of the Bands presented by Ernie Ball! Ernie Ball throws many battle of the bands, but non as prestigious in rock as the Uproar Festieb-botb-uproar-2014-lockup-transparent (1)val Competition.  TROY was hand-selected out of over a thousand bands as the winner of this National Battle of the Bands.

What does this mean??

That’s right…

We are going on Tour!!!

TROY played for their spot on the Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour in September of 2014 in Bonner Springs, KS. After what must have been a lot of deliberation due to the large amount of talent that entered, Ernie Ball announced that TROY was the band that would be joining the Uproar Tour of 2015. We are so excited and deeply humbled by this wonderful opportunity! TROY is extremely thankful for you, the fans. – None of this would have been possible without your undying support.

In August we will be launching out on a quest to play in over half of the states our lovely country has to offer, with some of the biggest names in rock today! We feel honored and SO stoked to have been chosen by such reputable people within the industry as Jay BaumGardner . These guys are leGuitarist Kyle Girth of TROY at Rockstar Uproar Festival 2014.gends to us and true pros when it comes to sound, performance, and the industry in general.

One of the sickest things is that we get to record in L.A with Jay @ NRG Studios. This dude produced some huge bands like Godsmack & Paparoach & tons more!! – needless to say we fell out of our chairs…literally…

TROY continues to be astounded by the amazing support of their fans. “We are forever in debt for the love and opportunities our fans have given us over the years, but none bigger than this” – Cord/ Lead Vox. With the awesome Uproar 2015 Tour coming & new music soon to drop, we owe so much to our loyal following. Thanks again to everyone that voted; all of our family, friends, and fans, as well as the great people at Ernie Ball and Uproar for already treating us like family. We can’t wait to represent Springfield and Missouri on this crazy experience.

Devour the Day rocked Springfield with Like a Storm and TROY

TROY joins Devour the Day and Like a Storm at the Outland Ballroom

TROY Enjoys Reunion with “Devour the Day”

On February 19th, Devour the Day returned to Springfield MO with Like a Storm and TROY to rock the Outland Ballroom.

Weegyptc last shared the stage with Devour the Day years ago when they were known as something else and toured much of the Midwest. Since that time, both TROY and Devour the Day have undergone many changes, with their music evolving as well. Devour the Day has excited their fans and radio stations across the nation with rockin singles including “Respect” and “Good Man” with their latest single “Faith” dropping within the last week. We were ecstatic to be reunited with these guys and to have a perfect opportunity to play a few of our own new tracks including “The Revolution” and “The Reckoning”.

New Zealand based band, Like a Storm, helped to pack the show with TROY and Devour the Day. Like a Storm has traveled the states and rocked the faces of growing fans with their newest album and first album with Another Century Records – Awaken The Fire.
Erik Milan of TROY Like a Storm has quickly created a reality that is prospering and proves to inspire many. They have a really cool story, and you can check it out HERE!

We had a blast shaking the floors at the ballroom and want to send a big thank you to Devour the Day and Like a Storm as well as Jimmy at the Outland Ballroom and Q102 for showing us all a great time! TROY would also like to thank all of our fans who came out and welcome all the new fans that supported us that night as well! Check out a sweet video Recap of the show here!

Music Insider Magazine Interviews Hard Rock Artist TROY

Music Insider Magazine features Rock Artist TROY in September 2014 Issue.

Music Insider Magazine interview with Cord Bishop

“They had the audience enthralled from the first song, and revved the crowd up through their entire performance; TROY had them already foaming at the mouth.”

~ Brian Mckinny  – Music Insider Magazine ~

We had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman named Brian Mckinny early this year when we opened up a show with Pop Evil late February. He was a cool cat with a freaking passion for words and rock music… two of  my favorite things.  Brian is a writer and Senior Editor for Music Insider Magazine, and he was there that night to interview Leigh from Pop Evil. We enjoyed the show on and off stage that night, and it was great to meet such a guy out there doing things that still mattered to both fans and artists in the world of rock. We kicked him some CD’s for the ride back home.

We kept in touch over the next few months and as luck would have it, we got to see him again at our show With Nothing More in August.  He and I took a walk downtown and  had a long discussion on everything from TROY to the industry and back.

The guy knows his rock music, and it felt like we could have talked all night, but I was thankful for the 30 minute interview I got with him. Check out his write up here.

“…“Dead Man,” is a powerful and dynamic song that will just plain melt your face.”

~ Brian Mckinny – Music Insider Magazine ~

Check out more of what Brian and Music Insider MagazineTROY Facebook Announcement of Feature in Music Insider Magazine and interview by Brian McKinny. does at their blog and website.

We also want to give a big shout out to everyone who read and shared the story!

Awesome to have the support you guys give us day in and day out!

Again I want to thank Brian for everything he did for us, and we hope to hear more from him in the future!

Peace Out,
